Corrosion caused deadly January chopper crash

Image
In January 2022, an AS565 Panther crashed due to corrosion in one of the engine components. This extremely rare corrosion within the turbine section caused one of the turbine blades to break off, sparking a fire that quickly spread. Two pilots lost their lives during this tragic event. Is there anything that could have avoided this tragedy?      As a helicopter engine mechanic, I know this type of corrosion would have been tough to detect through scheduled maintenance inspections. This helicopter was scheduled for a manufacturing inspection 250 hours after the accident. In this case, the corrosion would have probably been identified.       Corrosion discrepancies are often overlooked as they will always continue to form. Identifying the type of corrosion and the treatment required definitely makes an impact and could potentially save a life. I highly encourage everyone to take corrosion very seriously in an effort to avoid tr...

Icing affects the basic principles of aerodynamics

Image
We already know that "icing" affects an aircraft in flight; however, many people don't understand the reason why icing could lead to a catastrophe. For this reason, I chose this topic for my blog.      As ice forms on the surface of an airplane, it directly affects all four principles of aerodynamics. It increases drag by obstructing the aerodynamics of the airframe. It increases weight by accumulating throughout the airframe. Thrust is affected as it creates more resistance. Lastly, it affects lift as it disrupts the airflow around the wings. Additionally, when a wing is contaminated with ice, that wing will stall at a lower angle of attack, as illustrated above. Once all basic principles of aerodynamics are affected, it will become a real challenge to fly and handle that aircraft safely; therefore, this is not to be taken lightly.      Airlines spend millions of dollars every year on deicing and ice-preventative technology. For ...

Passengers removed from flights for misconduct

Image
Throughout the last few years Social Media has shown a lot of cases in which passengers would get removed from a commercial flight for misconduct. In some cases the passengers are dragged across the floor by the authorities. In some other cases, Flight Attendants are sent sent to the hospital as a result of the violent altercations. Why is this the latest trend and how do we stop it? This is a could be a sensitive topic as everyone might have a different opinion on each one of the individual altercations. The truth is that this topic makes me feel impotent; therefore, I would like to start an awareness for these kind of situations. For this reason, I immediately thought that this would be perfect for my blog.      I strongly believe that this continues to happen because passengers have yet to understand that Flight Attendants don't write the policies of the airlines. In a lot of cases they don't even agree with the policies; however, if they want to ke...
